Gear Doesn’t Create Magic. Familiarity does.

There’s actual research backing this. Not just my experiences - but that’s basically research anyway..
‍

In performance psychology, it’s called cognitive load reduction.

Quite a mouthfull. But what it means is: The more familiar you are with a tool, the less mental energy you spend operating it - and the more you can focus on creativity and decision making.
‍

When you don’t have to think about: How your lens behaves, how it handles light, what the color shift looks like. You free up mental bandwith to: anticipate moments, frame faster and take creative risks.
‍

And THAT, my friends, is where the magic happens.

Not, when you buy something new.

The $10K Illusion

Here’s something not many talk about - so let’s talk about it.

High end gear often slows you down. You start protecting it, you second-guess shots. And you might hesitate before pushing it.

A “perfect” lens can actually create pressur, whereas a “shitty” lens you know inside out, can become an extension of you.

And that’s the difference.

Constraint > Perfection

There’s a reason why some of the most iconic projects were shot on limited gear:

  • Early A24 films used minimal lighting setups
  • “Tangerine” was shot entirely on an iphone
  • Some of the most viral concert content online is handheld, imperfect, chaotic

Why?

Because energy > techincal perfection

Audiences respond to feelings, not MTF charts.

Just look at these images I took at the Fred Again concert last weekend in NY.

My Go To Gear

I’ve got so much gear.

Still, however, the first thing in my bag is a $450 Tamron 28-300 lens. Every. Single. Time.

Certainly not because it’s a perfect lens, but because it’s so versatile.
‍

‍

I’m sure if you put me in any situation, I’m confident I can make something work with that one lens.

Not because it’s special, but because I’ve used it soooo much it’s predictable to me.

I shot Fred Again with it last weekend, check how sick these images turned out.

The Real Takeaway

Stop waiting.

Stop telling yourself:

  • “When I upgrade, I’ll shoot more”
  • “When I get that lens, I’ll start”
  • “When I have better gear, I’ll pitch bigger artists”

Use what you already have and put. it. in. your. bag.

Learn its flaws and limits - and then push it until it feels like an extension of you.
